On December 30, the Yemeni military loyal to the Houthi Ansarullah movement launched retaliatory missile attacks on the Rajlah, Qana, and al-Hayz military bases in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border city of Najran. Separately, dozens of al-Qaeda militants who support the Saudi-led coalition were killed in clashes with pro-Houthi troops in the Dhi Na’im district of the central province of Bayda.

Economy Minister Adel Fakeih said Dec.28 that Saudi Arabia’s expenditure in 2015 increased by 13 percent to hit 260 billion USD, adding that about 5.3 billion USD of that figure was in military and security, which he attributed to the war on Yemen.  Since launching its attacks on Yemen on March 26, Riyadh has been resisting calls for disclosing the costs of the war, which largely consists of airstrikes.

Last Sunday Iranian President Hassan Rouhani accused Saudi Arabia of promoting poverty and terrorism by continuing to bomb Yemeni people and supporting armed rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad in Syria. He added that the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen was among the main causes behind the spread of extremism in the region.
