On February 8, Russian and Ukraine launched the second prisoner exchange after the Ukrainian military shot down Russian IL-76 with dozens of Ukrainian POWs on board LINK. As a result of negotiations mediated by the United Arab Emirates, each of the warring sides took 100 servicemen from the enemy captivity.
One hundred Russian servicemen returned from Ukrainian captivity, and the same number of Ukrainian servicemen were handed over to the Ukrainian side.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the exchanged Russian prisoners belonged to some ‘sensible category’. The officials did not clarify any other details. All Russian servicemen were examined by doctors and recieved the necessary assistance. They will be sent by planes to Moscow, where they will undergo treatment and rehabilitation in medical institutions of the Ministry of Defense.
The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Budanov said that in total, 3,185 Ukrainian servicemen were returned from Russian captivity during the exchanges.
The Russian president said earlier that Russia “will not abandon our guys.” According to him, Russia will return the captured Russian military by any means, including through the mediation of other countries. It is not the first time that the United Arab Emirates has acted as an intermediary in the exchange.
