Yemen’s Popular Committees on Wednesday seized control of the al-Khanjar barracks in Yemen’s Jawf Province after engaging in fierce clashes with al-Qaeda militants. The military camp was a major stronghold of militants in north Yemen. Forces loyal to Yemen’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, also used the facility for launching attacks on Ansarullah and their followers in neighboring provinces. Earlier in the day, Ansarullah fighters and their allied military units took control of the Aqabah region in the same province. The area was used as a major supply line for al-Qaeda militants, facilitating their movement between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
President Barack Obama on Wednesday ordered the deployment of 450 more U.S. troops to Iraq in public order to advise and assist Iraqi forces being built up to try to retake territory lost to Islamic State. The U.S. plan is to expand the 3,100-strong contingent in Iraq and open a new operations center closer to the fighting in Anbar province. The leaders of 4 main Macedonian political parties failed to reach an agreement on settling the crisis in the country during Wednesday talks, a European Commission press release said. The opposition blames the government of Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski for the country’s social and economic problems, aggravated by corruption. Representatives of the DPR and the LPR made a joint statement about the wish of the republics to join Russia. “The People’s Republic of Donetsk and the People’s Republic of Lugansk undoubtedly consider the Crimea as a part of Russia. Moreover, our republics would ideally like to join the Russian Federation,” Denis Pushilin and Vladislav Deinego said. On June 9 it was reported that the authorities of the people’s republics published a new version of amendments to the Ukrainian Constitution. The document raised many doubts as it stated that the city of Sevastopol and the Republic of Crimea were regarded as a territory of Ukraine.
