On February 3, at least 12 pro-government fighters were killed in a surprise attack by ISIS cells in Syria’s central region.
The attack took place in the early hours of the morning. The terrorists attacked government troops deployed along a road linking the town of al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs with the town of Ithriyah in eastern Hama.
The Baqir Brigade acknowledged that 12 of its fighters, all from Aleppo, were killed in the attack. The group didn’t provide any additional details.
Founded in 2012 in Aleppo, the Baqir Brigade is one of the largest Iranian-backed groups in Syria. The group has over 3,000 fighters. It operates on several frontlines, mainly against ISIS cells in the central region.

In its report, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said eight other pro-government fighters were killed in the same attack. These claims are yet to be verified.
Recently, ISIS cells intensified their operations in Syria’s central region. Last week, the terrorists targeted a bus carrying Syrian soldiers in southern Raqqa. No human losses were reported back then.
Government troops, backed by the Russian Aerospace forces, are currently hunting down ISIS cells in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle, which borders Homs from the north, according to the SOHR. The terrorists responsible for the recent attacks may get killed or captured soon.
