13 French troops were killed in a midair collision between two helicopters in Mali on November 26 night. The incident happend during the operation against Islamist militants in the west African country.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “deep sadness” at the crash and stressed the “courage of the French soldiers” in what he called the “hard fight against terrorism” in Africa’s Sahel region.
According to the French military, the incident involved ‘Tigre’ and ‘Cougar’ helicopters.
Since the start of the French military intervention in Mail, 38 French soldiers have been killed. The French operation started afrer armed Islamists revolted in northern Mali in 2012 and captured the city of Timbuktu, threatening to advance into the centre of the country.
Over 4,500 French troops deployed across the Sahel region. They are involved in operations against al-Qaeda and ISIS.
