170 Russian sappers, supported by 40 units of special military euipment, have started a de-mining effort in the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Friday.
“On a priority basis, specialists of the Russian Armed Forces Anti-Mine Center remove mines from roads leading to socially important facilities of the city, such as hospitals, water and electricity supply facilities,” the ministry said in a statement. “At present, groups of military engineers and sappers are clearing roads, roadsides and adjacent buildings near the city and on its outskirts in order to ensure the safety of humanitarian convoys heading to Deir ez-Zor [Deir Ezzor].”
The sappers need to claer an area of up to 1,500 hectares in Deir Ezzor city and nearby settlements.
On Thurdsay, ISIS launched a large-scale attack and cut off the important government supply line to Deir Ezzor city – the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor highway. This will likely create additional troubles for the de-mining operation.
Demining is a service to mankind.
Well done to those all the brave people demining anywhere.
Not placing them in a city and farmers fields in the first place is a greater service to mankind and the world. Blame the US for being so reticent in stopping the use of landmines. Princess Diana was a big spokesperson for the Ban on Land mines community.
Unfortunately spokespeople have no effect on the cowards using those things.
She joined the cause that was being pushed by Canada and other smaller voices in the world, helped give it more light.
Fully agreed.
But criminals and terrorists tend not to listen to the voice of reason.
Which is why we applaud those who have the guts to help demining.
That’s why many countries whom are part of the Coalition should be offering their services , if they truly cared about the civilians. All we see that they are only paying lip service and possibly are what everyone utters about them are true and they are responsible for the terrorist monsters in the first place.
