Late on November 19, at least three people were killed and 16 others were wounded as a result of a new rocket attack on the Turkish-occupied city of Afrin in northern Syria.

According to local media sources, at least six Grad 122 mm rockets launched from the southern direction hit the city’s residential areas.

In a statement, the Hatay Governor’s Office blamed Kurdish forces, namely the People’s Protection Units and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, for the deadly rocket attack. Neither of the groups has claimed responsibility for the attack, yet.

Kurdish forces control a small pocket of land to the south of Afrin. The Syrian Arab Army is present in the pocket along with a few units of the Russian Military Police.

Several rocket attacks targeted Afrin city this year. The deadliest attack was on June 12. The attack, which targeted residential areas and a hospital, claimed the lives of at least 22 people and wounded more than 20 others.

The new rocket attack came amid reports of a near Turkish military operation against Kurdish forces in northern and northeastern Syria.

One of the main targets of the alleged upcoming operation is the town of Tell Rifaat, which is located in the Kurdish-held pocket to the south of Afrin. This raises some serious questions about the timing of the rocket attack.
