On September 26, a new wave of Russian airstrikes targeted the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin in Syria’s northern region.
Three of the airstrikes destroyed a headquarters of the Turkish-backed Hamzah Division located near the historical town of Barad in southern Afrin. At least 11 militants were killed and 13 others were wounded as a result of the airstrikes. Many of the wounded are reportedly in a critical condition.

At around the same time, a series of Russian airstrikes hit the northwestern region of Greater Idlib. The airstrikes targeted the outskirts of the town of al-Bara in the southern countryside of Idlib, where a Turkish post is located.

A day earlier, Russian warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on Afrin in response to an attack by Turkish-backed militants on a post of the Syrian Arab Army situated to the south of the occupied area. Several militants of the Turkish-backed al-Shamiya Front were reportedly killed in the airstrikes.
The situation in northern and northwestern Syria appears to be spinning out of control. Russia is unsatisfied with Turkey’s strategy there.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on September 25 at a press conference devoted to the outcome of his visit to New York for the 76th session of the UN General Assembly that Greater Idlib is the last “terrorist outpost” in Syria.
“Our positions and the positions of the Syrian military in the de-escalation zone [Greater Idlib] are being attacked, and we will not allow that,” Lavrov said.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to discuss the unstable situation in Greater Idlib with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on September 29.
