Five Syrian soldiers were killed and at least 20 others were wounded on August 26 when al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Tawhid blew up then attacked a position of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the town of Milaja in the southern Idlib countryside, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based monitoring group said that Ansar al-Tawhid blew up the position from under the ground after digging a tunnel and filling it with explosives. This tactic was used by terrorist groups in Syria on several occasions in the past.

Ansar al-Tawhid militants raided the position and clashed with Syrian soldiers after the large blast, the monitoring group said, adding that the death toll from the attack could rise as many were wounded in the explosion and the subsequent clashes.

While the SOHR said that the attack was carried out by Ansar al-Tawhid, opposition activists said that al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the Greater Idlib region that the attack was launched from, was responsible.

Following the attack, the SAA carried out a series of artillery strikes against positions of HTS and its allies in the outskirts of the town of Fatterah, which is located right to the northwest of Milaja.

It’s worth noting that the casualty count provided by the SOHR has not been verified yet. The Syrian Ministry of Defense and credible pro-government news sources are yet to provide any details about the attack.

The SAA and its allies, first and foremost the Russian military, will likely respond with full force to the attack, which represents a blatant violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago.

Earlier this week, dozens of militants from HTS and its allies were killed or wounded in a series of Syrian and Russian strikes which were carried out in response to recent violations.

all this will never end until the saa and allies liberate idlib, they have allowed this to fester for years, i remember when the terrorists were allowed to leave aleppo and go to idlib, this is the result.
