At least 26 pieces of equipment of Kiev forces were hit by Russian Lancet loitering munitions in the special military operation zone between February 24 and March 1.
The Ukrainian losses, all documented by video, were: 13 tanks, including one German-made Leopard 2A4; eight self-propelled howitzers, including one French-made Caesar, one Swedish-made Archer, one Ukrainian-made Bohdana, one Slovakian-made Zuzana 2 and one Polish-made Krab; Two towed howitzers; One Strela-10 short-range air defense system and two unidentified vehicles.
The ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of Russia’s defense giant Kalashnikov Concern, produces two versions of the Lancet, the Izdeliye-52 with an endurance of 30 minutes and a one-kilogram warhead and the larger Izdeliye-51 that has an endurance of 40 minutes and is armed with a warhead weighting three kilograms.
The loitering munition flies towards the designated area with a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. After arriving in the area, the operator utilizes an onboard electro-optical system via a two-way data-link to detect, track and lock on the target. A laser-ranging system then controls the detonation of the warhead.
The small radar cross-section and minimal infrared signature of the electric-powered loitering munition makes it very difficult to detect and intercept.
Early on in the special military operation, the Russian military used Lancet loitering munitions only against high-value targets of Kiev forces, like air defense systems and radars. However, over the past year the range of targets expanded to include combat vehicles, likely as a result of an increase in the production of the system.
Lostarmour.info, a website that tracks military losses, documented 163 Lancet strikes during February, the highest number since the start of the special military operation. Some of the documented strikes were however from last year.
Ukrainian attempts to stop the Lancet with air defense fire, electronic warfare systems and countermeasures have so far seen very little to no success.
