The Yemeni army units loyal to the Houthi Ansarullah movement, hit a military base in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border city of Najran with a ballistic missile on Dec.26. The Houthi forces also fired over 80 Katyusha rockets at Saudi bases in Najran. Heavy clashes continue between Houthi fighters and Saudi-backed forces in the Dhubab district of Ta’izz. Also clashes are going in the northeastern part of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a.

In turn, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a Scud ballistic missile launched from Sana’a, in Yemeni territory, towards the city of Najran, on Saturday. The Saudis have deployed Patriot missile batteries designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles. But the Saudi-led coalition is continuing to suffer casualties from constant missile attacks because the Saudi servicemen aren’t trained enough to operate air defense systems successfully.

Last weekend, Saudi Arabian troops crossed into northern Yemen and took positions in a mountainous area overlooking the southern Saudi province of Jizan. Saudi commanders insist the incursions are temporary, but these statements are hardly truthful because of a complicated situation at the battlefield amid the failed peace talks. The further military escalation is expected in the nearest future.
