Militants attacked the town of Arbinda in the Sahel region near Burkina Faso’s border with Mali and killed 35 civilians and ensuing clashes with security forces left 80 militants dead, Burkina Faso President announced on December 24 evening.

“The heroic action of our soldiers has made it possible to neutralize 80 terrorists,” President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said. “This barbaric attack resulted in the death of 35 civilians, most of them women.”

Most of the killed civilians were reportedly women. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. A number of extremist groups are known to operate in Burkina Faso. However, the main suspects are ISIS and al-Qaeda-linked organizations.
