Four Russian military advisers have been killed and three others have been injured in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor in a shelling carried out by militants, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on May 27.
According to the statement, militants attacked an artillery battery of pro-government forces assisted by Russian military advisers. Two Russians were killed during the clashes. Two others died from wounds in hospital.
43 ISIS members were killed and 6 vehicles belonging to the terrorist group were destroyed.
The Russian Defense Ministry provided no details on the location and date of the incident.

The attack was carried out by remaining ISIS cells operating in the Homs-Deir Ezzor desert. According to reports, there are about 1,500 ISIS members in the area.
It should be noted that on May 23 ISIS claimed that its members had attacked pro-government forces near the city of al-Mayadin in the province of Deir Ezzor. According to the ISIS version, 23 “Syrian and Russian” troops were killed, 5 others were captured.

So Isis is hiding out in the Homs desert which is open terrain – you would think Russa could just carpet bomb the whole region. Its not like civilians are at risk.
It takes intel for bombing …and “carpet bombing” is not exactly Russian style of doing things. It would take T-95 Beras (that are not in Syria but Russia) to do the “carpet bombing”. You think that ISIS would sit and wait that they come from Russia and not move around in the meantime? It would be American style waste of money and resources all that with bad result.

I use Michellain map finding the detailed map version named Outdoors. Fine for whats up and down in the Eufrat valley, where the skirmishes between SAA and SDF has up/down as the most vital issues.
I also thought it was well known ISIS were and are very good under terrain and by that still have many depots.
And the fleemarket SAAs actually took some importtant from ISIS a few days ago. All it not bad.

I thought they had some sort of drone base in Palmyra running, there are only so many water sources to observe. Drones are much less expensive than men.
You can find many watersources in most deserts. Some are made collecting water like small dams. But the main thing is, if there is enough for growing things and animals like sheep and goats.
So smaller groups can be many places and if they drink, what there, You can go to another by local knowledge and maps.

I have been been in the deserts behind Sharja and Dubai, but all was sandhills there. Most parts of Syria is not like that at all.
I see facts. They are, that people like ISIS are clever and can hide in deserts and by that has surpriced many. They also are very mobile as infantery using fx sandstorms, rain, fog and darkness for protection.

I’m sure that the professional soldiers that run ISIS had the sense to stash supplies and munitions out in that desert so those wouldn’t get destroyed while fighting to retain the towns/villages and to have on hand in case they had to withdraw into the desert. If they are acquiring additional supplies then those should be coming from nearby sources in SAA “controlled” areas where the general population could give a shit over who they do business with as long as they can make some money. The roads will be safer to travel and they’ll use less precious fuel per trip. I suspect Assad bused those ISIS folks from Yarmouk into that region to put a major strain on their supplies and available water resources, which it did and prompted this recent attack towards Mayadin.

Its not about Oman for any of them. If it was for Damaskus, they would try to put many troops in to take it right away. Oman also have no use for SDFs. They have for own use and a little more and cant export any of it.

Some also forget, that the Syrian oilproduction is old and even from ancient times, så wells told as empty are only empty because of old technology. Most of those can give 4-5-6 times more then they already have. Russians cant do that and in Russia hires BP and Shell for it.

There’s nothing out there worth fighting over. No water at all. al-Tanf is just a border crossing for a road going up into Syria.
A road for 60 or 80 km pr hour is worth a lot compared to desert with 20 in trucks and 30-50 by technicals with supply.

Given that Deir Ezzor is home to Kurdish-American autonomy, we need more details about the perpetrators.

The pocket at Hajin was reported to have 2000+ fighters but that’s been revised down to 1,500. The other large pocket that covers large areas of Al-Hasakah and Dier ez-Zor is supposed to have 5,000+ and the Yarmouk camp had between 1,200 and 1,700, that’s a grand total of 10,000 or less Isis fighters still left operating in Syria. A report I read the other day stated the US believes there are a maximum 15,000 Isis fighters still left fighting in both Syria and Iraq, which I roughly work out as 10,000 in Syria and 5,000 in Iraq, doesn’t sound like a hell of a lot of fighters to me, I would have honestly thought they had a lot more fighters than that left. They’re fighting the US, Kurds, Iraqi’s, Russia and the SAA with 15,000 fighters in 2 different countries and still managing to hang onto territory, I’m starting to wonder if God is really on their side, how they’ve managed to hold on for so long with so few a numbers is nothing short of a miracle. Lucky for me I don’t believe in miracles, I just recognize US complicity when I see it.
It looks like much more air support is required in this area. I hope aerospace Russia force to give more support and protection to ground troops. All this area is just desert, you do have to worry about collateral damage.
