On November 2, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced that its cells had attacked a vehicle of the Turkish-backed militant group Sham Legion on the road between the villages of Khezawiye and Biye in the Sheerawa district of Afrin. According to the YPG, 5 militants were killed in the attack.

Constant YPG attacks on Turkish-backed forces and even the Turkish military in the region of Afrin are one of the factors contributing to the current level of tensions in northern Syria. On the one hand, the YPG carries out attacks on Turkish-backed forces. On the other hand, it releases statements claiming that it has done nothing to provoke Turkey when the Turkish military strikes its positions around Kobani.

If the US-led coalition wants to reduce the level of tensions between its proxies and the Turkish military in the areas of Manbij and Kobani in northern Syria, it has to put an end to YPG attacks on Turkish forces. However, this seems unlikely. So, the conflict will likely develop further.

Earlier this week, the US deployed an additional batch of troops and equipment to carry out patrols near Kobani and Manbij in order to prevent further Turkish strikes on the YPG. Thus, Washington turned its troops into a human shield defending the YPG there.
