On January 21, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released a video allegedly showing the destruction of a Pantsir-S1 air defense system of the Syrian Air Defense Forces during the January 20 IDF strike on Syria. MORE HERE
The video, which was made from several separate parts [please take a look at 0:17], gained a wide attention in the media and caused multiple speculations and opinions. Below, SF provides a version released by Syrian military commentator, Mohammed Saleh Alftayeh.
According to the provided version, the IDF employed IAI Harop loitering munitions to target the Pantsir-S1 system. The IAI Harop is an anti-radiation drone, which is capable of autonomously homing in on radio emissions.

Additionally, Alftayeh pointed out that the air-defense system was not active when it was targeted by the Israeli strike. This can be confirmed by the position of radar of the Pantsir-S1.

Summing up these reveleations and the fact that the Israeli video was made from several parts, it becomes clear that:
- The IDF assembled footage from different munitions to show like the Pantsir-S1 system was targeted during an active engagement because it was not been able to repel the attack. This montaged video was actively used by the Israeli media in its propaganda campaign on the conflict.
- In fact, the Pantsir-S1 system was targeted when it was inactive. The system had likely spent all of its ammunition and was waiting for a reloading vehicle. At this very moment, the system was hit by a strike.

And NO… Pantsir does not need electronic warfare for self defense but it does need ammunition! So if there is no other Pantsir around for protection they should not reload in open space like that and expose the Pantsir to the destruction. Glad to see this article…it confirms my previous post on the other thread, where I noted that the clip was spliced from two separate missile cameras…this is obvious at the 17 second mark, where the picture brightness suddenly increases dramatically…also it is obvious that the flight direction of the two cameras is not the same…the second on is in a nose up attitude, while the first is pointed more down…I did not notice the radar folded down on the Pantsir…and assumed it was the same one that had been firing in the first half of the clip…you can see my original comment in this thread…

But when the target is not hidden and crew is stupid enough to load ammunition out in open…. it is very easy to have radar lock on target and GPS. for misssiles and drones, bombs or such If they had exact GPS coordinates they didn’t need switching on “autonomous homing” It is the same with the missiles
Not necessarily. Older generations of anti-radiation missiles (that drone is kind of a cruise missile) would lose the target if the source of radiation went dark (shutting down the radar), but newer ones remember the coordinates.
The Pantsir’s crew’s mistake probably was when they ran out of ammunition and had to reload, they didn’t move the truck. With such a mobile system there’s no excuse not to do it, unless they were so unlucky that as soon as they ran out of ammo and before attempted to move, the missile (drone) came.
Russia will have to step up to the mark and deliver the S-400 systems and eventually the SAA will have to take back the Golan.

I think the Syrian Air Defence is using the S-300 radars but not the missiles I heard that’s because the F-16’s are staying so far away they have to use heavier missiles that show up on the radar, that’s why the success rate is so high, but the F-16 are too far away to take a shot at even using S-300. but I’m no expert.

I’m nearly blind but I thought it was a combination of both drone footage and footage from the missile itself that were shown. What I saw was a drone fire a decoy missile first, that spiraled down to the target at a slightly faster speed than the drone, then there appeared to be a missle shot towards the incoming drone and missile, in an attempt to intercept them but it missed, and straight after that another missile was fired from the drone that went to the left of the drone and attacked the pantsir from its left side, which was a slightly different angle to the one the first missile and the drone were approaching from, they came in from the left rear of the Pantsir. I suspect it was a drone that launched two missiles at the Pantsir, the first a decoy or targeting missile that was fired first, but then we see what appears to be a missile launched from the ground, which heads up to intercept the drone and incoming missile which just flies by, and then the second missile was launched by the drone just as the ground launched missile flew past, and the second missile was the one that struck the Pantsir destroying it, and then the drone just flew over the top. Now I know everyone will say, but the Pantsir was inactive, it couldn’t fire a missile anyway, but the ground launched missile may not have come from the Pantsir at all. I couldn’t see in the grainy footage but it may have been a MANPAD used by protecting ground forces that was used to try and intercept the incoming drone and missile, if the Pantsir was inactive to reload it would make sense to have a backup defence in place, a MANPAD is better than nothing, and I honestly believe the main footage we viewed was that from the drone and it launched 2 seperate missiles at the Pantsir the first a decoy and the second the killer missile, the other plume of smoke that appeared to come from the ground must have been a MAPAD fired missile that was trying to intercept the drone, the decoy missile and the drone combined would have made it difficult for even an operating Pantsir to target them both. I don’t think there’s anything falsified in these images, it all seems conventional and straightforward and shows exactly how the Pantsir was destroyed with 2 different camera angles of the same event, not a montage of separate events and images. But as I say I’m as blind as a bat, maybe I’m just seeing things.
