Afghanistan: Government Forces Recaptured Four Districts, Lost Six Others To Taliban

Fighting between Afghan government forces and the Taliban is still ongoing on several frontlines throughout the war-torn country.

Over the last few days, the Afghan National Army (ANA) and security forces recaptured four districts from the Taliban, but lost six others to the group.

On June 29, government forces recaptured the district of Kaldar in the province of Balkh as well as the districts of Pashtun Kut and Khan Chahar Bagh in Faryab province. However, Taliban fighters imposed their control of the district of Khakriz in the province of Kandahar and the district of Baraki Barak in Logar province.

On June 30, the ANA and security forces advanced in the province of Parwan and recaptured the district of Shinwari from Taliban fighters. On the same day, government forces retreated from Alasai district in the province of Kapisa, Kaldar district in the province of Balkh, Feroz Nakhchir district in the province of Samangan and the district of Gilan in Ghazni province.

The Taliban stepped up its attacks on government forces after the US announced its intention to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan before September 11.

Currently, the situation in Afghanistan is far from being unstable. The situation on the country’s border with Pakistan is not better.

The Ministry of Defense of Pakistan announced on June 30 that two of its soldiers were killed in an attack by “terrorists” near the Afghan border in the tribal district of North Waziristan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The perpetrators are yet to be identified.

With no progress whatsoever in the intra-Afghan peace process, the situation will likely worsen as more US troops leave the country.
