Africa's Sahel Bleeding Out In Terrorist Attacks

On August 19th, at least 11 Malian soldiers were killed and 10 more were injured as a result of an ambush attack on the convoy of the operation “Malika Theater Center” in the Mopti district in central Mali. The reports were confirmed by the Armed Forces of Mali (FAM).

“The FAM convoy was ambushed today, August 19, 2021, in the late morning. At 12: 45, a car bomb exploded on its way, after which the convoy was subjected to heavy shelling. According to preliminary data, 11 people were killed, and ten more were injured, nine of them were seriously injured, ” the Armed Forces of Mali noted, adding that measures were taken to evacuate the wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Al-Qaeda’s branch in Mali, Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin group, is known to be active in the region.

On August 15th, three other Malian soldiers were killed in a homemade bomb explosion that occurred on the road to the airport in the city of Menaka in north-eastern Mali.

Mali is not the only country that is currently suffering from an increase in the number of terrorist attacks.

On August 18th, unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy in Burkina Faso. At least 47 people, including 14 soldiers, were killed in the ambush between the cities of Aribinda and Gorgaji.

In their turn, the armed forces reportedly killed 16 criminals. The others managed to escape.

On August 9th, 12 soldiers were killed and 7 others went missing following the attack by militants on a village in the north-west of Burkina Faso,

Since the beginning of August, 94 civilians and soldiers have been killed as a result of militant attacks in northern Burkina Faso.

In Niger, on August 16, terrorists on motorcycles broke into one of the villages in the Bani Bangu district and killed 37 civilians, including 14 children and 6 women. The same village came under attack on July 26, when 16 people died.

The border regions in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are often suffering from terrorist attacks. The local authorities fail to coordinate their actions and ensure security on their borders.
