The Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) announced on May 12 that their units had carried out a series of attacks on Turkish-backed militants in northern Aleppo.
In an official statement, the group summarized the new attacks as follows:
- On May 5, ALF fighters targeted a gathering of Turkish-backed militants on a road between the town of Deir Ballut and the district of Jindires. Two militants were killed in the attack.
- On May 7, ALF fighters targeted a gathering of Turkish-backed militants in the town of Basuta in southern Afrin with an improvised explosive device (IED). Two militants were killed and two others were injured.
- On May 8, a sniper of the ALF targeted a Turkish-backed militant near the city of Marea killing him.
- On May 11, ALF fighters targeted a patrol of Turkish-backed militants in Afrin’s city center with an IED. A militant was killed and another was injured.
A total of six Turkish-backed militants were allegedly killed and at least three others were injured in the ALF attacks in northern Aleppo.
The recent attacks demonstrated the capabilities of the ALF’s cells in Turkish-occupied areas. In the last few months, the group’s agents began carrying out more and more such daring attacks.
The Turkish military and intelligence seem to be making no serious efforts to counter the ALF. Most of the group’s attacks are targeting Syrian militants, which are considered to be easily replaceable.
