The Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) announced on May 28 that their units had carried out a series of operations against Turkish forces in northern Aleppo.

In an official statement, the Kurdish guerilla group claimed that nine militants were killed and two others were injured in the new operations, which were summarized as follows:

  • On May 17, two separate attacks with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) targeted gatherings of Turkish forces in the occupied area of Afrin. Two Turkish militants, including a field commander known as Abu Amir Tell Rifaat, were killed.
Another operation targeted militants in the town of Azaz. However, the results of the operation remain unknown.
  • On May 18, a fortified position of Turkish-backed militants in the outskirt of the town of Mare was targeted. Four militants were killed. In another attack, a Turkish-backed militant was shot near Mare by a sniper. The militant was immediately killed.
  • On May 19, an IED targeted a vehicle of Turkish-backed militants on a road linking the towns of ‘Alkana and Jaqla in southern Afrin. A militant was killed and another was injured. The vehicle was also damaged.
  • On May 23, a gathering of Turkish-backed militants in Afrin’s city center was targeted with an IED. One militant was injured.
On the same day, a Turkish-backed militant was shot and killed in the vicinity of Mare by a sniper.
  • On May 25, a checkpoint of Turkish-backed militants near the al-Mahmudiyah neighborhood in Afrin’s city center was targeted with an IED. A vehicle was destroyed. Another IED attack targeted a vehicle of Turkish-backed militants on Afrin-Azaz road. The vehicle was damaged in the attack.

The Turkish military and its Syrian proxies responded to these operations by shelling the remaining Kurdish-held towns in southern Afrin. According to the ALF, the shelling damaged civilian properties as well as farmlands.

The ALF is increasing its attacks and developing its tactics. The guerilla group has become a serious threat to Turkey’s proxies in northern Aleppo. The Turkish military is yet to address the threat.

Is it any wonder the Syrian refugees living in Turkey don’t take up Erdogan’s offer to resettle in his new safe zone.
