On August 19, the Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) announced that it had carried out two attacks against Turkey’s proxies in the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
During the first attack, which took place on August 14, ALF cells targeting a vehicle carrying Turkish-backed militants near the town of Ma‘batli with an improvised explosive device. Two militants were allegedly killed. The Kurdish guerilla group released footage of the attack.
Two militants were killed and two others were wounded in the second attack, which took place in the town of Maryamayn on August 17. The ALF didn’t release footage of the attack or provide any details on it.
In a statement, the ALF said that the attacks were response to recent attacks by the Turkish military and its proxies without elaborating.
The ALF, which emerged after the Turkish occupation of Afrin in 2018, is said to be a proxy of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The shadowy group stepped up its operations in the northern Aleppo countryside in the recent week in an apparent response to Turkish attacks on the SDF.
The recent attacks by the ALF and the SDF are only provoking Turkey, which could soon launch a new operation in northern and northeastern Syria. The Turkish military and its proxies have been preparing for such an operation since May.
