On August 10, the Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) claimed responsibility for three recent attacks that targeted installation of the Turkish military in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
In a statement, the Kurdish guerilla group said that its fighters destroyed a surveillance system of the Turkish military that was installed in a key base near the town of al-Bab on August 5.
The ALF also took responsibility for the August 6 and 7 indirect fire attacks which targeted two bases of the Turkish military near the towns of Inab and Kaljibrin. The group claimed that the attacks killed six Turkish service members and wounded 11 others. However, Syrian opposition news sources said that only four service members were wounded in Inab base and six others were wounded in Kaljibrin base.
The attack on Inab base also damaged a battery of T-155 Fırtına 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, while the attack on Kaljibrin base destroyed a fairly large ammunition depot of the Turkish military.
The ALF, which emerged after the Turkish occupation of the Kurdish area of Afrin in 2018, is said to be a proxy of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The shadowy group’s activities have been limited in the northern Aleppo countryside.
In the last few weeks, the ALF stepped up its attacks on the Turkish military and its proxies in what appears to be a response to recent Turkish drone strikes on the SDF. The strikes claimed the lives of many fighters and commanders of the group and other Kurdish factions, including a leader of the Iranian-Kurdish Kurdistan Free Life Party.
