The Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) announced on March 21 that its units had carried out series of attacks on Turkish forces in the northern Aleppo countryside.

In an official statement, the Kurdish guerilla group said the attacks claimed the lives of 11 Turkish-backed militants and injured 11 others.

  • “On March 8, the [ALF] forces carried out an operation targeting a position of the mercenaries [Turkish-backed militants] in the village of Arab Waran of Shara district [in southern Afrinc], during which three mercenaries were killed.
  • On March 9, the forces targeted a gathering of mercenaries in the village of Shalta’a of Shara district, as a result two mercenaries were killed and two others were wounded.
  • On March 11, a sniper attack targeted a mercenary in the vicinity of [the town of] Marea. The mercenary was instantly killed.
  • On March 18, the forces damaged two vehicles belonging to the mercenaries of the Turkish occupation in the Mahmudiyah neighborhood of Afrin [city], as a result two mercenaries were wounded.
On the same date, the forces carried out an offensive operation on a checkpoint of the Turkish occupation’s mercenaries in the village of Kossa, in the Raju district [in southern Afrin], killing two mercenaries and wounding three others.
An explosive device also targeted a mercenary checkpoint in the village of Abidan in the district of Balbulah [in southern Afrin], as a result two mercenaries were killed and another was wounded.
  • On March 19, the forces targeted a position of the mercenaries in the vicinity of the town of Marea, as a result a mercenary was killed and three others were wounded,” the ALF’s statement reads.

The ALF didn’t claim responsibility for the March 18 rocket attack on Afrin city, which reportedly killed five civilians. The Kurdish group was accused of carrying out the deadly attack by some opposition activists.

The newly-announced attacks reveal that the ALF is becoming more active inside the occupied area of Afrin. This could pose a serious threat not only to Syrian militants in the area, but also to Turkish military personnel.
