The Russian army continues offensive in various directions on the Ukrainian frontlines, including on the outskirts of the Donetsk city agglomeration in the Donetsk People’s Republic. At the end of 2023, Russian forces took control of Mariinka, which had been one of the main strongholds of the Kiev forces for almost a decade. In the first days of 2024, the Russian military achieve new gains in the area.
In the Donetsk direction, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are expanding the bridgehead west, northwest and south of Mariinka. After the liberation of Mariinka, Russian troops entered the village of Georhiivka. They are already advancing in the eastern part of the settlement.
It is symbolic that on Christmas Night the Russian army took control of the churches of St. George and All Saints.
“In the Kurahovo direction, Russian troops occupied the territory of the Church of St. George and the Church of All Saints in the eastern part of Georgievka. The advance in a section up to 320 m wide to a depth of 230 m,” the Ukrainian military sources confirmed Russian gains.
The Ukrainian military confirmed Russian control of Mariinka and is now calling this direction the Kurahovo one, confirming that the town located on the strongholds west of Georhiivka became the main stronghold of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in this line of defense.
