Early on March 24, a large-scale attack with missiles and drones targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, as well as regions in the west and south of the country.
The Ukrainian Air Force alleged in a statement that its air defenses intercepted 18 of 29 Kh-101/555 missiles launched by Tu-95MS strategic bombers as well as 25 of 28 Geran-1/2 suicide drones. However, video footage that surfaced online, remarks by Ukrainian officials and reports by Russian sources indicate that these claims were not accurate.
In Kiev, mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that a series of blasts had occurred in the Ukrainian capital, with “missile fragments” falling in the Desnianskyi district. There were no reports of casualties, however.
Sergiy Popko, head of the Kiev city military administration, announced later that the missiles were fired at the capital “in groups”.
Meanwhile, in the western region of Lviv, mayor Andrii Sadovyi said that some 20 Russian missiles and seven suicide drones had targeted critical infrastructure.
The main target of the attack on Lviv was, according to Russian sources, an air base near the settlement of Stryi Air Base that was recently modernized to host American-made F-16 fighter jets. Ukrainian sources also reported that gas storage facilities in Lviv and the nearby region of Ivano-Frankivsk were hit.
Poland, a member of NATO, alleged that one of the Russian cruise missiles which were launched at Lviv briefly entered its airspace.
“The object entered Polish space near the town of Oserdow and stayed there for 39 seconds. During the entire flight, it was observed by military radar systems,” the Polish military said in a statement.
A follow-up strike with at least two Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles launched by MiG-31K attack aircraft targeted Lviv later in the morning, according to both Russian and Ukrainian sources. Sadovyi said that critical infrastructure was targeted.
In addition to the strikes on Kiev and Lviv, Russian sources reported that two Su-24 fighter bombers modified to carry British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles were destroyed in strikes that targeted the Kulbakino and Voznesensk air base in the Nikolaev region.
The Russian Ministry of Defense is yet to provide any details on the large-scale attack, which came a few hours after a Ukrainien attack on the Crimean Peninsula and less than two days after more than 133 civilians were killed in a terrorist attack near the Russian capital, Moscow, which was blamed on both ISIS and the Kiev regime.
Last week, the Russian military resumed large-scale strikes against Ukraine after weeks of provocations by Kiev, including dozens of attacks with rockets, missiles and suicide drones on Russian territory. Just like the terrorist attack in Moscow, these provocations were mainly meant to terrorize Russian civilians.
