Al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Tawhid claimed on February 7 that Syrian and Russian service members were killed in a rocket strike by its forces on the government-held town of Kafr Nubl in the southern Idlib countryside.
The strike allegedly targeted a joint headquarters of the Syrian Arab Army and Russian forces. Several “Burkan” heavy rockets were launched at the headquarter.
The Burkan is a makeshift rocket propelled by four Grad 122 mm boosters. Ansar al-Tawhid said that the headquarters was hit. However, such DIY rockets are known for lacking accuracy.

According to the terrorist group’s claims, Captain Daniel Zvariv, a Russian military adviser, was killed in the strike. Two other Russian service members, Marat Medvedev and Doridaro Zaven, were allegedly injured.
The group went on to claim that the strike also claimed the lives of seven Syrian soldiers from the 5th Crops and three from the 25th Division. 12 other soldiers were allegedly injured.
These claims, which appear to be nothing more than a desperate propaganda stunt. are yet to be confirmed by any credible source.
Ansar al-Tawhid is a close ally of al-Qaeda-linked Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib and the head of the al-Fateh al-Mubeen Operations Room.
According to the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria, HTS carried out 23 attacks with artillery, mortars or rockets in the last 24 hours. 13 of the attacks hit positions in Idlib, five in Aleppo, 3 in Hama and 2 in Lattakia.
The repeated attacks by HTS and its allies threaten the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5 of last year. These attacks may soon lead to a new military confrontation in the region.
