Al-Qaeda-affiliated Horas al-Din and Ansar al-Tawhid are amassing their forces in the southern part of the Syrian region of Greater Idlib and preparing to launch a large-scale offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies, RusVesna.SU reported on April 28.
The outlet released a video showing reinforcements from both terrorist groups amassing in the outskirts of the town of Knaddah, which is located 40 km to the west of Idlib city. The reinforcements included pickup trucks, rocket launchers, around 300 militants, as well as a number of trucks loaded with ammunition.
The video was taken by a reconnaissance plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which are keeping a close eye on the movements of Horas al-Din and Ansar al-Tawhid.
While Horas al-Din is in a conflict with al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, Ansar al-Tawhid is a close ally of the group.
The terrorists’ plan to launch a large-scale offensive against the SAA and its allies will certainly jeopardize the ceasefire in Greater Idlib. The ceasefire was brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5 of last year.
Horas al-Din and Ansar al-Tawhid will not be able to launch an offensive without the approval of HTS, which controls all frontlines in Greater Idlib.
Meanwhile, Turkey, which maintains thousands of troops in Greater Idlib, is doing nothing whatsoever to implement the March 5 agreement. Ankara’s passive attitude may soon lead to a serious military confrontation in Greater Idlib.

What has that got to do with al-Qaeda not being attacked. Turkey has done nothing since day one and by that agreement Russia/ SAA are well within their rights to blow these fu%kers away. Is Russia afraid of a bigger war with Turkey which may affect their business dealings. Turkey hasn’t abided by the agreement so that agreement is null and void so SAA can attack , but they don’t. Afraid of Turkey and all their troops there plus the border is close by for Turkey to send in reinforcements.. Seems to be gentlemen’s agreements all over Syria with Russia , Turkey , SDF . SAA . US , Israel not to cross agreed boundaries. Syria is effectively carved up amongst them.
It was just reported, John. Russia has been bombing the crap out of ISIS; they just killed 200 in Dier Ezzor area, and it has bombed greater Idlib hundreds of times if not more. It’s a matter of time. If Al-Qaeda are going to attack, the SAA will surely respond, and it would be entirely out of character if Russia did not participate. I think what ^ Al Gthafi is trying to say is that the only reason Idlib hasn’t been overrun by SAA with the help of Russian forces is because of the brokered deal with Turkey. The brokered deal is geographic in nature; they have contact-lines and mutual reconnaissance routes. On the other hand, I’m with you. The Russians should bomb Al qaeda. If they are massing for an attack, it will be just a matter of time.
Thanks Steve , I know Russia has been bombing repeatedly but it is like trying to stomp on ants .. I think it would be great if they mass and attack then SAA and Russia can open the gates of hell for them. There can never be a peace while they still remain. Once they are gone then the others many of or most who signed agreements with the government to stop fighting then bussed there from other places in Syria could be given some autonomous government ability within Syria to keep them happy and quiet . Maybe I misunderstood what Al Gat was meaning but time will tell if full scale fighting breaks out again. SAA have had a rest and a chance to re organise as have the other side and relative peace in most of Assads controlled part .

I doubt the voracity of this story, it’s more likely this is just a normal response to a buildup of SAA forces in the area. The SAA have been amassing a large fighting force just a few km south of the occupied town of Kbanah/Kabani, and Knaddah is only about 5km north of where the SAA have been deploying troops, so I suspect the terrorists are just taking precautionary measures with their reinforcement, because it’s probably the terrorists who suspect the SAA are about to launch an attack on them. Assad’s been saying for 18 months he wants to liberate the Al Ghab plains and secure all the farmlands, so the terrorists know exactly what Assad wants to do, and since Kbanah is about the best place for the SAA to launch an operation and begin liberating the plains to the east, and the SAA have been amassing their forces there for the last few weeks, it’s all pointing to the opposite of what this article suggests. I think the SAA tried to liberate Kbanah 3 times in 2019/20 and failed, and they’ve tried dozens of times before that too, but it’s turned out to be an impossible nut to crack. It’s located on the high ground that overlooks the Al Ghab plains and it’s the highest points in the area, that’s why the terrorists have been so successful at defending it, but if the SAA could take over the town it would really give them the advantage, so good luck SAA.
