Militants killed 18 soldiers and officers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in a new attack on the town of Atshan in the northern Hama countryside, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on June 25.
According to the London-based monitoring group, the hit and run attack targeted several positions of the army around Atshan. At least 6 of the attackers were killed during the clashes in the town’s outskirt.
The “Wa Harid al-Muminin” operations room, a coalition of al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, claimed responsibility for the attack. The coalition is led by Horas al-Din and it is known for being a close ally of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The northern Hama countryside didn’t witness any major attacks last week, as both sides were working to reinforce their positions in the region.
The new attack will likely encourage the SAA to resume its ground operations in northern Hama, as HTS and its allies are clearly not willing to halt their operations.
The SAA is getting it’s a$$ handed to it.

People who seem to know the numbers tell of 1100 SAA killed to gain some 100+ km2, no progress the last few weeks, several strategic lossess, all involving hills. At the rate of 10 KIA per km2 SAA will be wiped out before they can take Idlib. The same goes for rebels btw.

Hezbollah and Iran have stopped supporting the SAA, it’s a fact. This is because they think it will be easier for them to take over a weak SAA. The unnecessary killing of Syrian soldiers must stop. The only solution at this stage is negotiations with the Turks and Americans on stabilizing the situation in Syria.
Hezbollah and iran has trained many fighters in Syria and they all based in critical area like Alleppo dier zor abu kamal palmayra and southern Syria near golan. SAA and Russia only jobs is idlib province . The SAA can’t defeat the jihadists, they lose dozens of soldiers every day.
There is only one easy way for SAA to improve its situation in the short term and to be able to take on the rebels and that is by Assad coming to terms with SDF. A receding prospect as US will support SDF more and more once it falls out of love with Turkey and into hate of Iran. Receding also as Assad seems to be unable to compromise.

Iran is footing the bill for Hezbollah and the Iranian militias. Russia is footing the bill for the Syrian military. Shooting wars are very expensive to conduct on a daily basis where it’s easy for one side to shoot off $3 Million worth of ordnance in a day’s time during one moderately sized engagement. Iran has it’s proxies away from the fighting to save on costs and to allow Damascus to send more SAA units to the northeast. Russia may be having the SAA hold off until more munitions can be brought in to sustain prolonged engagements at several areas for a period of time.
The Russian do not fight on the ground, they only fight from air and they allow Turkry and Israel to attack Syria so they can sell them their arms and have good relation with 1.5m Russian Jews.
Russia have given Syria arms, training, air support and intelligence. Their special forces go into battle with the Syrians and have travelled the country convincing rebel groups to either give up the fight or join the SAA. Their military police maintain order while Syria establishes control over liberated areas.
Besides the cost of the Syrian operation, which is quite a sacrifice seeing as Russia is under sanction, Russians have lost their lives fighting in Syria.
Do you feel this is not enough? Do Russians owe Syria more? For example should they risk nuclear war and the total destruction of their country by attacking Israel and the USA on Syria’s behalf?
IMHO Syrians were dam lucky Russia intervened when they did. They should be grateful for what they got.
They only move in after other clear the ground and their special force are there to look after Russian assets.
Russian infantry isn’t leading the charge by any means, and rightly so however Russian special operators are deployed in enemy territory targeting air strikes and sniping.

Russia is keeping Syria alive. It may seem like Russia has a mighty force in Syria but compared to the combined forces of Israel, USA, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, GB, France and Jordan they are tiny. Those mighty Russian air defences and 4 air superiority fighters would run out of ammo and be overwhelmed in a matter of hours under a sustained attack. Syria would be bombed flat in days.
Russia’s main weapon in Syria is diplomacy. They have been able to keep Israel, Turkey and the USA at bay for the most part. …. there have been a few pinpricks by Israel and the USA over the years but so far no full on attack from any party.
Be patient and consider where Syria was 4 years ago before being too critical of what Russia has achieved in Syria.
They have never stopped, nor yhey will. There’s no discussion on negotiations with americans/turks. That’s ouy of question, to put it this way, no any yalks with ocupiers and attackers.
1. The fact is that the Iranians and Hezbollah are not helping in Idlib. And the SAA loses dozens of troops every day. 2. How will the Russians cause the Americans and the Turks to withdraw without negotiations?

That area was taken over by the militants shortly after the fighting started in 2011. The SAA tried taking it back several times then gave up because the heavily forested hilly terrain was easily defended and costly to assault. The two sides agreed to a truce where Damascus left them alone as long as the militants didn’t try to acquire more territory. It remained quiet up there afterwards for a number of years except when the two sides took occasional artillery potshots at each other.
Assuming this news is true, these sleeping SAA cells must wake up right away before they be totally eliminated.
