Ansar al-Tawhid, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group in Greater Idlib, announced on July 12 that its fighters had shelled several Syrian Army (SAA) positions near Abu Duhur airbase in southeastern Idlib with a new cannon, dubbed “Ansar-1.”
Photos of the supposedly local cannon reveal that it is a Soviet-made U-5TS 115mm smoothbore tank gun mounted on a Ural-4320 6×6 truck.

The U-5TS, which has an effective range of around 2,000m, is the main gun of the T-62 battle tank. Ansar al-Tawhid’s terrorists likely salvaged the gun from a heavily damaged T-62.
On July 14, the terrorist group released a short video of its improvised cannon in action. The video shows the cannon’s strong recoil, which could lead to significant decrease in accuracy.
Ansar al-Tawhid is a part of the so called “Wa Harid al-Muminin” operations room, a coalition of al-Qaeda-affiliated factions. The coalition attacks SAA positions around Greater Idlib on a regular basis.
The Ansar-1 improvised cannon is an example of how these terrorist groups are attempting to maximize their fire power with their very limited resources.

As much as I hate those Turk’s mercenary allies (aka “terrorists”), credit where credit is due, that is a pretty neat improvisation. Although the recoil could be reduced considerably with a good muzzle brake and a hydraulic recoil return.
It doesn’t really take a lot of brainpower to bolt a gun to the back of a truck.

Since the cannon has no transverse, the crew can fire the gun with the transmission in neutral so the entire truck can absorb the recoil.
