The Syrian Army (SAA) and its allies have imposed their control of al-Safa amid collapse in ISIS’ positions in this heavily fortified area, a source in the SAA told SouthFront on November 17.
According to the source, the heavy rain destroyed most of the fortifications and hideouts of the terrorist group during the last few days. This forced the remaining terrorists to flee towards the eastern Homs desert, where ISIS maintain a small pocket.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) confirmed that the SAA had made a significant advance in al-Safa and said that the highest positions in the area are currently under the army control.
“Our units in the southern region made significant advance in al-Safa and imposed fire control on the remaining ISIS-held positions,” the SANA quotes a military source as saying.
Meanwhile, Syrian pro-government activists reported that the SAA had killed, injured and captured dozens of ISIS fighters during its final push in al-Safa. “Abu Hajar al-Sheshani,” a senior ISIS military commander in the Damascus desert is among the terrorist killed by the army.
The SAA launched its military operation in al-Safa following a brutal ISIS attack on the southern governorate of al-Suwayda in late September. The army faced several major setbacks in the course of the operation. However, it finally achieved success in mid November.

Time to take back Al-Tanf from US morons and start a low intensity war of liberation against the NATO and US scum that are propping up the headchoppers. After al-Tanf the focus should be on liberating the eastern Euphrates valley in coordination with Iraqi Shia militias. The President of Iraq is on a state visit to Iran and even alluded to that.
It is a great victory for the SAA,however the ISIS thugs who managed to escape will have to be dealt with later.
Why was there not a plan to stop any escape by ISIS to the Homs desert as this has been a problem in the past?
Those ISIS who did escape will be replenished by the US Coalition of Terror in Al Tamf I suppose.
Maybe they choose to let them escape rather than confronting in a final battle to avoid more casualties and finish them off later in the homs desert later. But like a guided escape so they could only go there

I dont think so. Its impossible to cover shoulder by shoulder having soldiers enough and in a heavy terrain.

I think there was an underground agreement between ISIS and SAA-Russia because It is incredible the numbers given (terrorists killed and terrorists in site). Were they allowed to move to Al-Tanaf (USA) area ?
Terrain is very rough, not every square meter is guarded. The encriclement is porous.
Also, it was reported that 1500 terrorists were in Al Safa yet only dozens were reported killed. If that is correct then more than 1000 have escaped. Sure is something wrong there.

The detail I missed in this news is that the SAA now controls the top of the al Safa volcano. That would have been a particularly difficult position to take all along. And while the head-choppers held it, they would have had fire control over all the surrounding area. Same for the tops of all the other smaller volcanos. The SAA took advantage of the weather to assault the top, while the head-choppers used the opportunity to sneak away. Explains the delay.

Wow – this op got BIG towards the end. There probably were plenty of head-chopper bodies. But with the Russians taking part, I’m not surprised at the absence of gratuitous trophy photos of dead al Safa head-choppers on social media. Russians are pretty disciplined about that. They’ll mention a body count in one of their press briefings in a few days.

i’d hope they’ll put up a security / surveillance element in place – if they have reason to suspect what you say (don’t know how likely could that be, as long as the tanf garrison exists that likeness cannot be zero though).
being a deserted area, i see no harm in mining it, or deploy sensors and alarms so to trigger artillery and airstrikes in case the goat-people get into it again.
Although it is a desolate area, it has been very tough terrorist base to clear and it has been a great drain on SAA resources.
For this reason it is a serious danger for Syria.
It will be interesting what security the SAA considers to be prescient.

from what can gathered technically, and without contamination from ziojihadist comment, it appears that the SAA has conducted a series of maneuvers in the area, probably to attain a better encirclement of the terrorist units, in which some losses occurred (although most of them based on amaq’s “estimations”.)
when the intended encirclement was attained, the main attack developed, in which also Russian air power and specops deployed, which resulted in the destruction of the goat-lovers.

idk what you mean by “prescient”. You put mines, and sensors, a Grad and a SP howitzer batteries trained on the area. as soon as a goat is cut in half by an AP mine, the nearest sensor goes on, downloading the location to a command element, that in turns provides it to the artillery.

Once they’re dispersed as a fighting force without facilities they’re a lot more vulnerable to law enforcement. Individuals in hiding or who are trying to blend in with non combatants have been successfully managed everyplace else that has been cleared from. Once they’ve effectively defected from the Isis chain of command with light arms at best in most cases. Their ability to pose any type of significant threat to the government is drastically reduced.
The non story in the other cleared areas are defections from the terror groups by their members. The relocations to Idlib and elsewhere got all of the press. The defections got no press. And I suspect that it was a much bigger factor in the clearing operations than is generally acknowledged. Essentially the defections without formal reconciliation with the government were unofficial reconciliations. With the government looking the other way in a lot of cases as long as suspected militants didn’t cause further trouble. When the opportunity presented itself to defect from a losing cause. The Isis members took it, and got out while the getting was good.
Al-Safa was one of the formally cleared areas where there was a resurgence of Isis after it was initially cleared. What may have actually happened was that some Isis elements were defeated initially and the area was declared cleared, when actually it wasn’t. Because there was a significant hidden Isis presence in underground facilities and embedded with the local population that wasn’t detected initially. And when they started to cause problems. The government realized that the Isis presence was bigger than they originally thought. And once the government started going after them. They found out that they still had quite a bit of clearing work left to do. Which hopefully now is essentially complete.
Demographics and geography play a big part in these areas. They’re so remote and sparsely populated that during peace times the law enforcement presence is minimal. And the Syrian military isn’t set up to police these areas in the absence of actual civilian police infrastructure. They have military police units. But they’re currently be used elsewhere.

In the map, there is an arrow showing maybe a escape route of terrorists, and this is very strange …..¿ How , if SAA had totally this area surounded, were the terrorists able to escape ? were There two thousand terrorists ? How many were killed ? How many did escape ?
there is no explanation of the arrows. if you want to interpret them that way, then i could freely say that there is SAA emplaced at the direction the long dashed black arrow points and that the ragheads were easily dispatched.

If they really are not hiding, I see the same. That slope was the last they controlled and escaped from being open to the desert and small mountains below.
Transportation and water might be a problem, but Syrian troops cant follow them into Jordan or Iraq. They might meet some welcome comitty or even some grenades from Al Tanf.
