On April 1, fighters of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab group conducted a hit and run attack against a joint base of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Somali Army in the town of Bulamarer northwest of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, according to Reuters.
Somali Army Major Farah Osman told Reuters that al-Shabaab had targeted the base with two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), which led to the destruction of two vehicles of the AMISOM and the Somali Army.
“Then a large number of al Shabaab fighters began firing from under the trees … it was a hellish battle,” Reuters quoted Maj. Osman as saying.
Spokesman for al-Shabaab group Abu Musab announced that the terrorist group had lost 14 of its own fighters and had killed 59 soldiers of AMISOM. However Ugandan army spokesman Brig. Richard Karemire said that only four Soldiers of AMISOM had lost their lives in the al-Shabbab attack.
The attack, which is the biggest against AMISOM this year, proves that al-Shabaab fighters who are stationed north and northwest of Mogadishu are still a serious threat.
The AMISOM and the Somali Army backed by the US cleared Mogadishu from al-Shabaab fighters on August 6, 2011. However, the forces have not conducted any successful operations against the remaining fighters of the terrorist group north and northwest of the city.
