F-22 stealth fighter jets have been deployed at an air base in southern Israel, as part of the United States’ massive buildup of military forces in the Middle East.
A total of 12 F-22s were seen taking off from Royal Air Force Lakenheath in England on February 25, although one reportedly returned to the air base due to a technical issue. The stealth fighters had arrived at Lakenheath last week and remained there for several days, reportedly due to issues with their accompanying refuelers.
The final destination for the fighter jets is reported to be Ovda Air Base, although this is yet to be officially confirmed by the U.S. or Israel.
The F-22s are the U.S. Air Force most capable air-to-air fighter. They can also be used to destroy enemy air defenses and strike other ground targets.
During last June’s Operation Midnight Hammer attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, F-22s helped protect B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. It should be noted that four days before the operation, which took place towards the end of the Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, F-22s made a similar transit across the Atlantic.

According to the Military Air Tracking Alliance, a team of about 30 open-source analysts that routinely analyzes military and government flight activity, dozens of American fighter jets — not just F-22s, but also F-35s, F-15s, and F-16s — were deployed to the Middle East.
The team said it also tracked dozens of accompanying fuel tankers, as well as hundreds of cargo flights, heading into the region since mid-February.
Just a day before the F-22s arrived in Israel, American tankers and cargo planes were spotted at Ben Gurion Airport in the center of the country.
Meanwhile, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. largest aircraft carrier, continues operating in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and has passed Crete. It is expected to join the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been in the region for an extended period.
According to Hebrew media, Israeli officials believe that a U.S. attack on Iran is inevitable, and top military brass from the two countries have reportedly been in contact. One official quoted by Channel 12 news on February 24 said that a diplomatic resolution to the conflict would be the “surprise of the year.”
During his State of the Union speech on February 24, U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out against Iran over several issues.
“Since they seized control of that proud country 47 years ago, the regime and its proxies have done nothing but spread terrorism and death and hate,” Trump said.
“We took out [Qassem] Soleimani… it had a huge impact,” he boasted, referring to the commander of Iran’s Quds Force who was killed in a drone strike in Iraq in 2020.
Turning to the recent protests in Iran, which the Islamic Republic brutally repressed, Trump said that “just over the last couple of months with the protests, it looks they killed at least 32,000 protesters,” calling Iranian leaders “terrible people.”
Trump even went as far as claiming that the Iranians “are working to build missiles that can reach the United States of America.”
The deployment of the F-22s in Israel and Trump’s later speech suggest that an attack on Iran may be just a few days away.
Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet again on February 26 in Geneva with Iranian officials. Iran has shown openness to a deal, all while defending its nuclear rights, and refusing any discussion over its missile program or regional influence. This goes directly against the demands of the U.S. and Israel. Thus, an agreement is unlikely.
