United States Vice President JD Vance announced on April 12 that negotiations with Iran have ended without a peace deal after the Iranians refused to accept American terms not to develop a nuclear weapon.
Vance tells reporters in Pakistan that American officials are leaving the negotiations with Iran without a deal, planning to return to the United States.
The talks ended after 21 hours, Vance said, with the vice president in constant communication with U.S. President Donald Trump and others in the administration.
“But the simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance said during a press conference in Islamabad.
“That is the core goal of the president of the United States. And that’s what we’ve tried to achieve through these negotiations,” he added.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency also confirmed that negotiations with the U.S. ended without an agreement, noting that “excessive demands hindered a common framework.”
Press TV reported that among the points of contention have been various issues including passage rights through the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s nuclear rights.
Later, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that no one had held any expectation that talks with the United States could have reached an agreement within one session.
“Naturally, from the beginning we should not have expected to reach an agreement in a single session. No one had such an expectation,” the spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, said, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
He added that the Islamic Republic is “confident that contacts between us and Pakistan, as well as our other friends in the region, will continue.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called on the U.S. and Iran to keep their commitment to maintain a two-week ceasefire.
“It is imperative that the parties continue to uphold their commitment to ceasefire,” Dar said, according to a statement released by his office.
Pakistan will continue to play a mediating role and try to facilitate dialogue between the U.S. and Iran in coming days, he added.
Shortly after, Trump shared to Truth Social an article from Just the News suggesting he could impose a naval blockade on Iran if it fails to accept US demands.
The article titled “The Trump card the president holds if Iran won’t bend: a naval blockade,” says the blockade would choke the Iranian economy and pressure Iran’s allies China and India, who rely on Iranian oil exports.
The article says such a move by Trump would “reprise his successful blockade strategy” after a previous naval blockade “brought the Venezuelan economy to its knees” ahead of the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January.
Such a move would be, however, very risky for the U.S. as it would have a very bad impact on the global energy market, especially that Iran would likely retaliate by completely closing the Strait of Hormuz.
The failure of the talks was not surprising. Just a day earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video statement that the campaign against Iran “is not over.”
“We hit them, we still have more to do,” he added.
The ceasefire will likely continue, and the two sides could hold another round of talks, but it seems that they are still way off. A resumption of fighting in a week or so is highly likely. If this happens, the U.S. may escalate by launching ground operations in Iran.
