Late on July 27, another rocket attack targeted the Conoco gas plant in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, where the United States military maintains a base.
The attack was reported by both the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV, which is close to the Iran-led Axis of Resistance, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a United Kingdom-based monitoring group that supports the Syrian opposition.
Citing field sources in Syria, Al-Mayadeen said that explosions were heard from nearby areas coming from the direction of the Conoco base.
U.S. military helicopters were dispatched to the eastern countryside of the province and the vicinity of the base, while US forces launched flares nearby, according to the news channel.
From its side, the SOHR said that U.S. artillery shelled several towns held by Iranian-backed forces close to Conoco after the rocket attack.
A similar attack targeted Conoco early on July 27. There were also reports of an attack against the base on July 26. On the same day, several rockets were launched at Ain al-Asad Air Base in the western Iraqi province of al-Anbar, where U.S. forces are deployed. None of the attacks caused casualties.
Following the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, dozens of attacks targeted U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, claiming responsibility in most cases.
The group suspended attacks against U.S. forces around five months ago after the death of three American troops in a drone strike on a base in Jordan, reportedly upon a request from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to facilitate talks on the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq. However, it escalated attacks against Israel.
The recent attacks on Ain al-Asad and Conoco may have been carried out by the IRI in response to U.S. attempts to stall talks on winding down its military presence in Iraq.
