Another Russian Patrol Was Attacked In Southern Syria

Sergei Novikov/TASS

On August 23, a patrol of the Russian Military Police was targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED) as it was passing near the town of al-Malgah in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra.

Al-Malgah is situated between the separation line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the western countryside of Daraa governorate.

Syrian pro-opposition news sources said that the attack resulted in casualties. However, as of August 25 the Russian Ministry of Defense has not released any statement on the attack. Usually, the ministry only address terrorist attacks which result in fatalities.

This was the second attack to target Russian troops in southern Syria in less than a week. Early on August 18, a joint patrol of the Russian Military Police and the Syrian Arab Army was struck by an IED as it was passing near the Khirbet Ghazaleh bridge on the strategic Damascus-Daraa highway. Back then, no casualties were reported.

Russian troops are present in southern Syria to monitor the implementation of the 2018 reconciliation agreement as well as the separation line in the Golan Heights.

The recent attacks on the Russian Military Police may have been an act of revenge by ISIS. The terrorist group lost its general leader in southern Syria, Abu Salem al-Iraqi, and top military commander in the region, Abu Omar Al-Jababi, in recent Syrian intelligence operations. It is very likely that Russia somehow aided the two successful counter-terrorism operations.
