Another Syrian Intelligence Officer Assassinated In Daraa

Late on June 30, a warrant officer of the General Intelligence Directorate (GID) was assassinated in the northern countryside of Syria’s Daraa.

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed the warrant officer, who was identified as Nasser Thayer al-Ghussein, in the town of Simlin. Ghussein was a native of the town of al-Sharayah, which is located a few kilometers to the east of Simlin. The exact nature of his work with the GID remains unclear.

The assassination of the GID warrant officer was the most recent in a series of attacks on government service members and civilians in Daraa.

On June 21, a roadside bomb killed two officers of the Syrian Arab Army’s 112^th Brigade between the towns of Ain Thakar and Jamlah in the western Daraa countryside. On June 23, a warrant officer and three personnel of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate were wounded as a result of a bombing in Daraa city.

Later on June 28, the former Secretary of the Baath Party branch in Daraa was killed along with four other members of his family when gunmen attacked his house in the town of al-Sanamayn in the northern countryside of governorate. On the same day, gunmen shot and killed three Syrian soldiers on a road between the towns of Jasim and Nawa in the western countryside of Daraa.

The security situation in Daraa appears to be spinning out of control. Despite recent attacks, the government is yet to implement strict security measures in the governorate.
