Late on August 17, a Turkish combat drone carried out an airstrike on the outskirts of the village of al-Aghybish in the northern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.
Al-Aghybish is located near the town of Tell Tamer, a key stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Assyrian Tell Tamer Military Council (TMC) controls the village and most nearby settlements.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Turkish drone strike wounded a fighter of the TMC.
This was the second Turkish drone strike to target SDF-held areas in northeastern Syria in less than 24 hours. On August 16, a drone strike hit a position of the SDF in the outskirts of the town of Amuda in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah. The group said that five of its fighters were killed as a result of the strike. The casualties were identified as Ahmed Mohammed Qafour, Saad Rizan Khalil, Maher Rakan al-Makhlif, Mahmoud Ahmed Muslat and Walid Hamid Hamy.
On the same day, Turkish fighter jets carried out a series of airstrikes on positions of the SDF and the Syrian Arab Army in the outskirts of the town of Kobane in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo. Three Syrian soldiers and a child were killed.
The recent Turkish strikes on northeastern Syria were a response to an indirect fire that targeted a Turkish border post to the west of Kobane. The attack, which was allegedly carried out by the SDF, claimed the lives of at least two Turkish soldiers.
Tensions between Turkish forces and the SDF in northern and northeastern Syria have escalated to the point where a military confrontation seems inevitable.
