On April 23, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) carried out another attack on the Russian territory. The checkpoint in the village of Tetkino in the Russian Kursk region was shelled again with mortars by Ukrainian forces deployed in the Sumy region. No casualties were reported, but the attack resulted in some material damage to civilian facilities.
“Today, mortars fired again at the border checkpoint in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region from Ukraine. As a result, the Rosselkhoznadzor premises caught fire. Our border guards and the military are keeping the situation under control. There are no wounded or dead,” the head of the Kursk region said.

On Arpil 22, a column of Ukrainian tanks reportedly attempted to break into the Russian territory in the Belgorod region from the Ukrainian Kharkiv region.
On April 13, Ukraine shelled a border checkpoint in the Kornevsky District of the Kursk region. The governor of Kursk Oblast said that retaliatory fire was able to repel the strike and there were no casualties. On April 14, there was another incident on the border.
The Ukrainian army carries out small sorties and uses explosives as well as rockets to harm Russian military, communication facilities and civilians. Ukrainian military helicopters have also violated the Russian airspace and targeted industrial facilities in Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Defence has already warned that Russian forces would strike Ukrainian decision-making centers, including those in Kyiv, if attempts to sabotage Russian territory continue.
The Ukrainian provocations on the Russian territory have no military goals but are aimed at distraction of Russian forces and threatening of civilians.

Watching that meeting, I got the impression that something far more serious than the plant was discussed. I believe that that there is real concern that, as Ukraine is losing, there will be a nuclear or biological attack either in Russia or in Ukraine to be blamed on Russia. Something very, very dangerous is in the wind. I hope I am wrong.

No, these are clear and blatant terrorist attacks on purely civilian “targets”. Not once have they hit anything remotely military. They don’t even try, they just fire away, because they don’t even have reconnaissance of the target region. But it is easy as cake to look at a map and just eyeball it. As long as they hit a village or city they “hit their mark”.

I just hate all the needless loss of life, limb, and social and economic health that results from all these US misadventures these past 20+ YEARS, but I love seeing them blow up in the faces of the planners and leading to lasting reversals in US geopolitical standing. As you’ve explained a couple of times, just look at the truncated state of Ukraine and the burden on the EU this hapless collaboration is becoming. But that in itself is the Military goal, Southfront – to distract Russian forces attention so the Ukrainians can slow the Russian attacks on other fronts.
Russia made a terrible mistake by abandoning Kiev, Chernigov and Sumy regions that they lost so many soldiers and military equipment in capturing. Absolutely makes no sense. It seems that they don’t value their soldiers lives. Equipment, equipment but lives of soldiers must matter.
It does make an awful lot of sense. Kiev was a feint to divert and fix Ukrainian forces in place while airstrikes took out fuel and weapons depots to cut off reinforcements for the Donbass front. At the same time the Russians prepared a nice cauldron in Donbass. Plus, the Russians could just use the withdrawal as a token of goodwill during the negotiations in Turkey – win-win.
As for their fallen soldiers: you don’t use your military if you are not prepared to lose some of your men. On balance it was a strategic victory and that is all that counts.

You are not allowed to deliberately target civilians, never. So that does not fulfill any military purpose to begin with. Plus, the Russians won’t be distracted by these nuisances. To count as feint or distraction it must look believable enough for the enemy to invest resources.
