According to the Belarusian border patrol, on October 29, a group of refugees from Syria and Iraq were found on the Belarusian-Polish border. In the group’s camp, there was a body of a dead man. Judging by the footprints left at the border, the body had been moved from Poland to Belarus.
According to the refugees, they were in Poland when the tragedy happened. One of the men, an Iraqi citizen, had diabetes and needed insulin, but Polish law enforcement officers detained foreigners and ignored their requests for medical assistance. According to the refugees’ claims, they were also beaten by Polish officers, and a female official was particularly cruel.
The refugees explained that when the sick man died, armed men forcibly took them to the border, cut the fence installed on the Polish side and forced them to move the body across the border.
Together with the group of refugees, two foreigners with documents issued by the German authorities, who were trying to help refugees, were detained and forcibly displaced by the Polish security forces.
An investigative task force was deployed on the spot to establish the circumstances and causes of the death of an Iraqi citizen.
This is not the first such tragedy at the border, which was the result of extremely cruel treatment of refugees by representatives of law enforcement agencies of EU member-states.
