Early on March 19, another wave of Israeli strikes targeted military sites close to the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
Citing a military official, the state-run news agency said that Israel launched an aerial attack from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights at several military targets outside Damascus. Syrian air defenses intercepted Israeli “missiles and shot down some of them”, the unnamed official said, adding they caused only “material damage”.
Two Syrian military sources familiar with the strikes later told Reuters that Israel targeted a ammunition depot of Lebanon’s Hezbollah near the town of Yabroud in al-Qalamoun mountain chain, to the northeast of Damascus.
According to a Western intelligence source, another strike hit a military site near Qutayfah, also located in al-Qalamoun to the northeast of the Syrian capital, within the same stretch of territory where Hezbollah forces are well entrenched.
“These latest raids are clearly targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure in Syria, especially its elaborate fortifications along the Lebanese-Syrian border,” the source who requested anonymity told Reuters.
It was the second Israeli attack within 48 hours on the same mountain chain that spills over into Lebanon where Hezbollah has several major supply routes into Syria.
The first attack, which took place on March 17, also targeted a weapons depot belonging to the Syrian military and used by Hezbollah.
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip last October, targeting mainly Syrian military sites and personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other affiliated forces.
While Syria has so far refrained from responding to Israel, the recent attacks do not appear to have any impact on the operations of Hezbollah or other Iranian-backed forces.
