Another Wave Of Russian Airstrikes Hit Syria’s Greater Idlib (Videos)

On October 7, another wave of Russian airstrikes targeted positions of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

The airstrikes hit the area of Hersh Batnnah in the eastern Idlib countryside as well as the outskirts of the towns of Bsanqul and Muhambal in the southern countryside of the governorate.

At around the same time, the Syrian Arab Army launched a series of artillery strikes against positions of HTS and its allies in different parts of Greater Idlib. The strikes resulted in a number of casualties and material losses.

A day earlier, a similar wave of Russian and Syrian strikes targeted the region. Video footage of the pinpoint strikes were shared by several news sources.

The recent strikes on Greater Idlib were carried out in response to a drone attack that targeted the annual graduation ceremony at the Syrian Military Academy near the central city of Homs on October 5. The attack claimed the lives of 89 civilians and service members and left more than 277 other wounded.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the drone attack. However, current evidence indicates that HTS or one of its allies was responsible.

Despite recent escalation, the ceasefire in Greater Idlib which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago is still holding. Any further provocations by HTS and its allies could however lead to the collapse of the ceasefire in the region.
