“At least 25 protesters were detained by the local police,” said a local journalist.
On Thursday, hundreds of people in Lima organized a protest against the controversial US-led free trade pact Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) signed by 12 countries.
According to local media, the protest turned violent when angry demonstrators hurled Molotov cocktails at security forces who in turn responded with tear gas, sticks and shotguns.
“At least 25 protesters were detained by the local police,” said a local journalist.
The signatories to the TPP pact are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Peru, the United States, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam. The TPP was reached on October 5, 2015 after five years of negotiations.
However, the protesters argue that the deal favors multinational corporations at the expense of domestic interests including healthcare threat by potentially increasing the prices of medical drugs, as well as threatening jobs, the environment and workers’ rights.
