A 83-strong group of Armenian specialists including sappers, doctors and security personnel arrived in the Syrian city of Aleppo on February 8 to provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

“The Republic of Armenia has decided to provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people due to the harsh humanitarian conditions in Syria, especially in Aleppo, following the heavy military operations, and based on UN Security Council’s Resolution 2393 of 2017 and Resolution 2401 of 2018, as well as based on written requests from Syria and due to a large Armenian community in Aleppo,” an official statement by the Ministry of Defense (DoD) of Armenia reads.

The Armenian DoD stressed that the specialists will only work in the areas where no military operations are being carried out. Russian Forces will be providing transportation and security for the group.

Aleppo was home to more than 60,000 Syrian Armenians prior to the war. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) attack on the eastern part of the city in 2012 forced most of them to flee to safer areas within the country or even to return to Armenia.

Since the beginning of the Russian anti-terrorism operation in Syria, Armenia has stepped up its humanitarian efforts in the war-torn country. The deployment of the specialists group is considered a new height in these efforts.
