The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) finished their combing operation in the central region of Syria on February 21, according to the NDF’s media center.
The operation, which began earlier this month, covered the safe areas between the deserts of Homs, Damascus, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and even a strip of the border with Iraq. In the course of the operation, the SAA killed several ISIS members and seized loads of weapons and military equipment, which had been left behind by the terrorist group.
The combing operation was aimed at preventing the remaining ISIS fighters in central Syria from launching new attacks on residential areas in the northern al-Suwayda countryside and the eastern Homs countryside.
Despite the success of the operation, the terrorist group is still controlling more than 4,000km2 between Homs and Damascus, according to a recent report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Observers believe that hundreds of highly-experienced, well-armed terrorists are currently hiding there.
The SAA, backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces, may launch a military operation to eliminate ISIS cells in the Syrian desert in the upcoming few months.
