On December 6, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) discovered loads of weapons and ammunition during search operations in the governorate of al-Quneitra and the region of Western Ghouta, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The weapons included a Soviet-made RPG-29 anti-tank weapon, several rounds of the US-made SMAW shoulder-launched rocket weapon, a Yugoslav-made M79 Osa anti-tank weapon along with several rounds, assault rifles, heavy machine guns and loads of ammunition of different calibers.

In a related development, the reconciliation committees in al-Quneitra handed over Israeli medical equipment and supplies to the SAA. Most of these equipment were supplied to the White Helmets organization during the last few years.

The SAA uncovers similar equipment and weapons caches on a regular basis. A day earlier, the army uncovered a large-amount of US-supplies weapons and ammunition around the city of al-Quneitra and the crossing of Nasib on the border with Jordan.

These weapons were left behind by radical militants, who withdrew from southern Syria few months ago. The militants likely planned to use the weapons to carry out terrorist attacks in the near future.

I think you need to redo the headline, South Front, the SAA says every weapon they capture was US or Israeli supplied. Even though most of this is old Soviet weapons, and during the war of routine defections massive amounts of SAA weapons have been captured and/or sold on the black market, and the US was certainly not the main backer of Rebels, and no fundamentalist Muslim would be caught dead working with Jews…

Daniel Miller

one problem with your statment a massive imount of yugoslav and bulgarian weapons are used by the FSA that dosent make sense since the SAA never used Bulgarian or Yugo made weapons they only used Chinese Iranian and some older Russian made weapons. A massive imount of Bulgarian 122mm grad rockets as well as the SAA dosent use bulgarian made rockets and a bulgarian jurnalist was killed since she discovered a network of NATO organised weapons traffecing in syria thro S.Arabia and Turky into syria.

Fred Dozer

Actually the US readily admits they are the main backer of the Rebels. First, they said they had “no boots on the ground” Now they control 1/3 of the country. Who is the terrorist and trespasser ?

Smaug

You are.

rudy

There is no sutch thing as ” Rebels” they are all mercenary’s !

Smaug

Only if you’re schizophrenic.

Fred Dozer

I agree. Paid to fight and some paid traitors. But the USA planned the destruction of Syria, using paid puppets, and are still paying, training, and supplying them, with taxpayer dollars. In the meantime, they cut food stamps for Americans. Pure evil has run America for a long time.

weapons from russia were also supplied en masse by the US to rebel groups from countries from the ex soviet zone of control, like (ex) Yugoslavia or Bulgaria. All the weapons may be supplied from the US, though many could come through different paths, like from stockpiles captured by Daesh in Iraq or from the Kurds.

Smaug

Did you actually read what I just said?

Hubert

“read what I wrote” or “hear what I said” Anyway – yes – the sponsors of the rebels have been various countries. Turkey, Saudi Arabia and many other who liked to meddle in the muddy business. We have no viable statistics on “who was the major sponsor of the rebels”, because of the many factions and of the covered up sums. I don’t recall direct connections between the islamists and Israel, but indirect connections are easy to find, through the involvement of the US or of the Saudis. You should keep an eye on the big picture and why everything is going down like it is. It is like a tectonic plate between Israel and Iran.

Kristina Rain Mcleod

Mmkay. The weapons supplied by the US and Israel could come from as far as Libya and that goes for anything from rifles to tanks. Some as close as Iraq.

A lotnofnthe eastern bloc weapons , especially the ammo, is surplus either confiscated by US forces in previous conflicts or was manufactured in munitions factories in places Bulgaria and Ukraine. Both of which have arms companies that are in a massive state of growth because of the sheer amount of money they’re earning for fulfilling contracts awarded to them by the US govt alone.

Are there old captured government weapons? Of course. Those are easy to spot because they have likely seen the most use and changed the most hands and then got thrown in a pile as the US and EU and GCC stepped up their smuggling efforts. Guys were putting down old AKMs for newer M16s etc. Or newly minted ak74s produced by Ukraine and Bulgaria.

Russian designed sure US/EU/GCC signed, sealed, delivered? The only way to go.

Smaug

Yes, I’m aware Soviet junkers are everywhere, that is the point. These weapons could just as easily originated from anyone that even have the remotest support for Rebels. And more importantly neither the US nor Israel supports ALL Rebels because the Rebels are a plethora of groups that only share their opposition to Assad. To put things in perspective, by now the majority of pro-Assad forces are former Rebels, some of which are returning to government service after defecting from them to the Rebel moderate militias. That said, it is more likely the SAA is reacquiring their own weapons that had been stolen by Rebels than anything else.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Whether the weapons are Russian made or US made, or made by anybody else, it still doesn’t confirm anything about who supplied them to the rebels. The suppliers would have bought them from anyone they could get them from at the right price. If there were no security issues [getting caught buying/supplying them], they’d buy the cheapest weapons they could that would be reliable, easy to maintain, and effective. Russian weapons fit that bill better than any other nations weapons, and since they’re everywhere and hard to trace, most of them will probably be Russian made, does anybody think the Russians themselves sold their weapons to the enemies they were just fighting, I don’t. The FSA and HTS beat Isis here several times and confiscated their weapons too, some of the heavy weapons, rocket/missile launchers and the like may have even been captured from Isis, that’s also possible. The only way to find out who supplied the weapons is to go back and try to trace them through the supply chain, and that’s next to impossible in some cases, especially when they’ve been through so many hands and ended up in Known terrorist groups or even non conforming nations who don’t keep records or supply reliable data. Or you could do it the other way around and just put the most likely suspects in the supplier position and try to work out what they’ve been doing, check sales, transportation logs, strange communications and deals, that’s like looking for a needle in a haystack and I doubt even the mighty Russian intelligence agencies wouldn’t like that prospect, unless of course it was something major like a massive haul of very modern weapons. I don’t think the Syrians or the Russians would be too concerned about the details, they already know who’s responsible for allowing the flood of weapons into Syria in the first place, who supplied an old rocket launcher or two wouldn’t even be on their cards. The US supplied heaps of shiny new weapons, vehicles and equipment to the FSA when they were backing them, Isis ended up with a lot of it, captured, traded, sold, given to them by the FSA, we could definitely say the US supplied those weapons if we wanted too, no one could say you were wrong if you did. And where is all that shiny new stuff now, it wasn’t all captured and destroyed when Isis was all but eliminated in Syria, it’s still got to be out there somewhere.
