Attack On Kursk Nuclear Plant Exposes Ukraine’s Intention To Provoke Russia

A Ukrainian suicide drone attempted to attack the Kursk-2 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the settlement of Kurchatov in the Russian region of Kursk, regional governor Alexander Khinshtein said on September 25.

The Kursk-2, located close to the border with Ukraine, is a major energy project under construction to replace the aging Kursk NPP.

The drone launched by Kiev forces hit one of the buildings under construction at the plant site, Khinshtein said, adding that that the structure was damaged by shrapnel, but there was no fire risk.

According to the governor, the Ukrainian drone attack resulted in no casualties, and the Kursk-2 NPP continues to operate normally.

A statement issued by the press service of the plant later said that radiation levels are within normal limits at the Kursk NPP.

The attack on Kursk-2 highlights an increase in Ukrainian attacks on nuclear facilities. The main target of these attacks remain the Zaporozhye NPP located near the settlement of Energodar in the Zaporozhye region.

Zaporozhye NPP Director Yury Chernichuk noted the increase of attacks in a recent interview with TASS, linking it to the upcoming visit by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, to Russia.

“I would say that the intensity of this impact is somewhat cyclical and wave-like. There have been periods of silence lasting several months. Then there is an active phase every day. We are currently experiencing such a phase and are under constant attack. There was an intensification before the meeting between the Russian and U.S. [United States] presidents in Alaska. Now, the Ukrainian armed forces have obviously increased their attacks because of Grossi’s visit to Russia. The intensity also depends on the amount of money or weapons supplied [to the Ukrainian military] from abroad,” Chernichuk told the news agency.

On August 12, the day before the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, Kiev forces shelled the vicinity of Zaporozhye NPP, causing a fire at the plant’s hydraulic structures.

Later on the eve of the meeting between Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev and Grossi in Kaliningrad between June 5 and 6, the Ukrainian military attacked Energodar and the NPP infrastructure several times.

Grossi is arriving in Russia on September 25 to attend the World Atomic Week forum, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry. Putin will speak at the forum.

Also on September 25, the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant relied solely on backup diesel generators for electricity for the second day in a row due to damage caused by Ukraine to the last external high-voltage line.

The recent Ukrainian attacks on nuclear facilities are clearly meant to provoke a response from Russia that Kiev could use to ask for more support from the U.S. and other allies in order to further escalate.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on September 25 that Trump told him Kiev could respond to Russia’s attacks on its energy infrastructure with tit-for-tat strikes. This proves that attacking the Russian remains a priority for Kiev, which appears to be willing to do whatever it takes to gain support for this.

it takes an amazing amount of combined insanity and stupidity to attempt to destroy a plant that would poison all of europe. which way do the winds typically blow ? to europe !

but there is also one more part to this. ukraine needs energy to not freeze, dry up and blow away into becoming compost pile. they need this plant ! so the they destroy exactly what they desperately need ?
who ever made this decision should be be-headed. as, there is nothing of any use between their ears
