On June 15, Abdullah al-Muheisni, one of the most prominent religious leaders of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), was subjected to an assassination attempt in Idlib City.
A suicide bomber blew himself up in Al-Muheisni’s armored vehicle as he left the mosque of Abu zor al-Ghifari in Idlib city, but the attempt failed. Al-Muheisni was slightly injured.
An official statement by HTS denied the killing of Al-Muheisni’s bodyguard in the blast. The explosion wounded 8 people, mostly civilians.
HTS accused ISIS of the attack unofficially, where HTS claimed that it was able to arrest an ISIS cell in western Idlib, where it captured an ISIS element and killed another. It also found a magnetic IEDs commonly used in assassinations.
Idlib Province is witnessing a situation of instability, where daily attempts to assassinate and exchange of fire between the factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and HTS or people sympathetic to ISIS are becoming the normal situation. It’s worth mentioning that HTS – the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria – is the strongest force in Idlib province currently.
Could easily be either that one of his own fools was careless with ordnance or the whole episode is fictional.
