The United States, EU and some other countries imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia’s energy, business, banking and defense industries since 2014.

Austria supports Russia despite Western sanctions

On Wednesday the Austrian vice chancellor said that the country supports enhancing bilateral relations with Russia despite the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West.

Reinhold Mitterlehner heads the Austrian delegation, a group of representatives of the country’s leading companies that is currently visiting Moscow. He met the Russian Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev on Tuesday.

“The decisions led to constraints in bilateral relations. These decisions have been made not at our level. We want to take measures against such [a state of affairs] in [our] relations.” Mitterlehner said commenting on the introduction of the EU sanctions and Russia’s countermeasures.

“We have over a thousand companies doing business with Russia from Austria, and another 500 Austrian firms working in Russia. 40,000 employees are being affected,” said Mitterlehner.

The west deteriorated the relation with Russia when Crimea became a part of Russia in 2014 and over Moscow’s alleged involvement in the Ukraine crisis. United States, EU and some other countries imposed several rounds of sanctions on Russia’s energy, business, banking and defense industries.

Moscow also announced a one-year food embargo on products originating in states that imposed sanctions against it in August 2014 in a response to Western sanctions. Later, Moscow extended it for another year.
