On September 17, six terrorists of ISIS were killed in central Syria as a result of airstrikes carried out by Russian warplanes, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The London-based monitoring group said that the Russian airstrikes targeted hideouts and vehicles of ISIS in the following areas:
- The Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle.
- The outskirts of the town of Resafa in the southern countryside of Raqqa.
- The outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs.
The airstrikes were likely a response to the September 9 eastern Homs attack. The attack, which targeted a truck of the Russian Military Police, claimed the life of a Russian service member who was later identified as 45-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Schneider.
Russian warplanes have carried out dozens of airstrikes on ISIS terrorists in central Syria since the attack. Large reinforcements of the Russian Military Police and Syrian government forces were also deployed in eastern Homs in the wake of the attack.
According to the SOHR, Russian airstrikes and Syrian ground operations in the central region have claimed the lives of 1,050 terrorists of ISIS since 24 March 2020.
Despite sustaining heavy losses, the terrorist group continues to operate in the region. According to several reports, the terrorist group has been receiving support from US-backed fighters based in the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tanf, where the US-led coalition maintains a garrison.
