Azerbaijan Declared November 8 A National ‘Victory Day’

UPDATE: The Victory Day was rescheduled for November 8, according to the Azerbaijani leadership.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed an executive order to establish a “Victory Day” which will be celebrated in the country on November 10 of every year.

The new Azerbaijani national holiday is meant to celebrate the “victory” over Armenian forces in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Azerbaijan launched an attack on Nagorno-Karabakh on September 27. The heated battle ended on November 9 with a Russian-brokered peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The deal, which will see most of the region returning to Azerbaijan’s control, became active on November 10.

“In response to Armenia’s latest provocations and military aggression, the Azerbaijani people waged a Patriotic War in order to put an end to the occupation of our lands, force Armenia to peace, implement the requirements of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, return IDPs to their native lands and restore justice.

All the Azerbaijani people were mobilized and united for this sacred cause. After 44 days of military operations, the victorious Azerbaijani Army liberated from occupation the cities of Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zangilan, Gubadli, Shusha – the crown of Karabakh, Minjivan, Aghband, Bartaz settlements of Zangilan district, Hadrut settlement and many villages of Khojavand district, including Sugovushan village of Tartar district, several villages of Khojaly and Lachin districts, as well as important strategic hills in the direction of Aghdara, Murovdagh and Zangilan.

We have liberated our lands at the expense of the lives and blood of the Azerbaijani people, our hero martyrs, soldiers and officers,” the presidential order, which was signed on December 2 reads.

While Azerbaijan is attempting to present the recent battle in Nagorno-Karabakh as a complete victory, the truth is that Baku made several major concessions.

The capital of Nagorno-Karabakh and the region’s largest city, Stepanakert, is still under the control of Armenian forces. Furthermore, the peace deal provided for the deployment of thousands of Russian peacekeepers in the region.

Azerbaijan is rewriting history, taking advantage of Armenia’s crisis and the incompetence of its government. This is yet another failure for Yerevan.
