Russian forces continue their assault on last Ukrainian positions in the border areas in Kursk region. In the southern sector, the retreating Ukrainian forces entrenched in the Svyato-Nikolaevsky Belogorsky Monastery located on a height northeast of the village of Gornal, where intense fighting has stalled advances amid heavy Ukrainian resistance. The monastery was turned into a fortified stronghold for Ukrainian troops, who have deployed mortar groups, artillery, and drone units on its territory to repel Russian attacks.
According to Russian military reports, remnants of the Ukrainian garrison, comprising elements of the 129th Territorial Defense Brigade, 80th and 95th Air Assault Brigades, and special operations units, have refused surrender demands. A negotiation attempt reportedly ended in violence, with Ukrainian nationalists allegedly killing their own officer to prevent capitulation. Russian troops, including the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment, 81st “Bears” Special Forces Brigade, and 40th Naval Infantry Brigade, are conducting the mop up operations under relentless drone strikes and artillery fire.

Amid the ongoing battles, Russian units continue evacuation of civilians from the area under fire, with Ukrainian forces accused of deliberately targeting evacuation convoys. Despite Ukrainian reinforcements being deployed to the border area, Russian commanders express confidence in eventually securing the monastery, though progress remains slow due to the terrain.
On the broader Kursk front, Ukrainian forces are holding defense in Oleshnya and Gornal while preparing fallback lines in nearby forests. Drone warfare has intensified, with Ukrainian FPV and “Baba Yaga” drones mining approaches and harassing Russian troop movements. In neighboring Sumy region, Ukrainian forces are preemptively mining routes near Yunakovka, anticipating a potential Russian breakthrough.
Despite Russian pressure, Ukrainian resistance remains fierce, employing artillery, drones, and even some tactical airstrikes. The battle for Gornal Monastery underscores the grinding, attritional nature of the conflict, with neither side willing to cede critical high ground.
